A year of hourly sun, simulated for every combination of array size and battery size feeding 1 MW of GPUs. The map shows tokens per dollar for pure solar and battery, relative to running on gas alone. Change the prices and see when the gas side stops paying for itself.
Stronger colour is better. The star marks the best pure solar design; hover a cell for detail.
Prototype on a simplified weather model (seeded random clear and cloudy days over a clear-sky sun), not the post's Mathematica model. East-west array, 14% derate, 90% round-trip battery, everything amortized over the chosen period with no financing cost. Governor: with a day-ahead forecast, whenever the sun can't carry the load the GPUs throttle to the one steady level the battery can hold until the sun can, so a sunny morning never dips. Tokens scale with the cube root of power (P ∝ fV²); at full power 1 MW of GPUs makes an assumed 2 million tokens per second (about 0.5 J per token, a large model on current hardware), so half power still makes 1.6 million. The gas option keeps 100% uptime by burning gas whenever sun and battery fall short.
